The Least Becomes the Greatest

Breadcrumb Navigation

We originally had 5 hens and a rooster. One we lost during a big storm that blew through and another (which wasn’t laying eggs) we think the racoons managed to get ahold of. Of the three that are left the Leghorn went broody. Of the breeds we thought she was the least likely to go that way, but here we are. I had tried to slip a few more eggs under her, but I think I was a few days late. Of the additions, one hatched but struggled and didn’t survive and the four other eggs didn’t hatch. They had developed pretty far but our hen was up and out of the box so often that it seems they didn’t have the necessary warmth and turning to survive. So we have a cute little chick that follows mom around the yard. It’s a pretty amazing thing for us first timers.
